Artist to raise cash
to help model tiger

An artist who painted a rare tigress has vowed to raise money to keep the animal in a wildlife sanctuary.

Linda Wain is selling some of her work to help fund the £3,000-a-year cost of keeping 12-year-old Siberian Tigress Ginny.

Linda recently travelled to a sanctuary in Kent to paint the tigress which is one of only 500 of her species left in the world.

Ginny was rescued from squalid conditions in a Belgian zoo in 1996 by the Born Free Foundation and moved to the sanctuary.  Now, instead of barren concrete bars she has grass underfoot, deep beds of straw, a pool to bathe in and space to run.

Linda was so moved by the experience of painting Ginny that she decided to try to help raise money to keep her at the sanctuary.  She has turned her painting, called Ginny, into Greeting Cards, which she aims to sell.  Linda is also auctioning off another painting, Majestic Slumber, a picture of two Siberian tigers.  The painting has a starting price of £6,500.  All proceeds will go towards tiger rescue programmes.

It is estimated that there are only about 5,000 tigers of all species left in the world.

Linda said: "Ginny is the most beautiful animal.  I found that I just had to go and see her to really get an idea of her personality. It would have been impossible to paint her just from photographs. It's important to see how the animal behaves".

"Sometimes they have a twinkle in their eye or they can be quite shy. With Ginny, I could tell she was really contented and I just wish I had been there when they released her into her new enclosure"
